Project BRAVO
From conflict zone to a haven for people and wildlife
Garamba National Park sits in the north of the Democratic Republic of Congo. This area had been threatened for years by the Lord's Resistance Army and other armed militia groups.
An overhaul of law enforcement in Garamba National Park in 2016 saw African Parks engage ESPA to provide training for four years to 2021. ESPA provided a range of training, from new recruits to officers, and supported the development of specialist training teams within the park’s ranger units to provide a lasting legacy of improvement. Since then, elephant poaching has reduced by 96%, and the park’s population of endangered Kordofan giraffe has increased.
In an area once subjected to attacks by the Lord’s Resistance Army, Garamba has become a beacon of safety and stability for its wildlife and its people.
